Mountain Troop personnel are trained to be experts in mountain terrain and the conduct of operations at high altitude. They require extensive skills in mountain climbing, ice climbing, long distance skiing. The members of mountain troop are also skilled in arctic survival and cold weather warfare.
Most of their training takes place in Europe, particularly in Norway and Germany, which is home of the world renowned German Alpine Guides Course. The SAS send two men a year to attend this year long course which dedicates six months to skiing training and six months to climbing training and with this experience, several members of Mountain Troops have climbed Mt. Everest.
The skills and techniques of the Mountain troops allow the SAS to reach areas that most would consider as inaccessible areas and to attack the enemy from unexpected directions.
